Premise, mission, promise

Welcome to iSecurity. It's a new publication that is coming to you based on a premise, a mission and a promise.
Our premise is that the worlds of security and information systems are converging. What was once so-called physical security - fences, locks and guards - has evolved into what might now be labeled electronic security - CCTV cameras, card access systems, biometrics. This electronic revolution has largely been fueled by developments in computers and software, which have both added impressive functionality and necessitated an increased dependence on information - data. So electronic security nowadays is more than ever a function of the computer systems that are at its heart. And with computer systems becoming increasingly interconnected, security is becoming closely linked with a company's information systems.
A second part of our premise: While these two disciplines - security and information systems - have a lot to learn from each other, they do not always communicate effectively. A security director can obviously learn from his IS director, but we contend also that the IS guys can benefit from more focused application of the good old-fashioned principles of security management that have been the security director's bread and butter since those long-ago days of fences and padlocks.
Which brings us to our mission: To provide a forum for the exchange of information between security and information systems. We approach this mission from a position of strength as publisher of the leading magazine for security end-users, Access Control & Security Systems Integration. Our newest publication - iSecurity - will be distributed to our regular subscribers and also to information systems professionals involved in security. We hope you will find this first issue interesting. If we are to achieve our mission of providing a quarterly forum for communication at a critical time in the development of information systems and security, we must have contributions from both sides of the house. We need feedback. We need opinions.
Which brings us to our promise. We will constantly strive to serve the interests of readers, to promote a cooperative working relationship between the disciplines of security and information systems, and to be open to all viewpoints. We are magazine editors, but in this case we are also taking on the role of facilitators. We want to facilitate an effective exchange of information that will change the world. The world of information systems and security, that is.
Again, welcome to iSecurity. Make yourself comfortable. Don't hesitate to say what's on your mind. We hope to have an interesting discussion.
