Wal-Mart and Gap Inc. were honored before members of Congress May 23 for their commitment to Code Adam, an child safety program, during the 2001 Congressional Breakfast and Sixth Annual National Missing and Exploited Children Awards ceremony.
The annual ceremony is presented by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) to recognize law enforcement and others for work in helping to keep children safe.
This was the first year Code Adam participants were honored during the ceremony. Sensormatic Electronics Corp., a provider of electronic security solutions to the retail industry, sponsored the award, which is presented to retailers who adopt the Code Adam program. Code Adam is an efficient process to help locate children who are reported missing in stores.
Wal-Mart was presented with the Sensormatic/Code Adam Founder's Award in recognition of its role in creating the program and implementing the program in all of its 2,600 locations in the United States.
Accepting the award for Wal-Mart was Bill Burns, district loss prevention manager, who developed the program that gives store employees a step-by-step plan to follow so that attention can be quickly focused on finding a missing child.
The Gap was also honored with the First Annual Sensormatic/Code Adam Award for implementation of the program in 3,800 Gap, Banana Republic and Old Navy locations in the U.S.
