RFID TO LEAD THE WAY AMONG FUTURE SECURITY TECHNOLOGIES
Feb 1, 2006 12:00 PM
The push for radio frequency identification (RFID) as a standardized process in supply chain management has experts predicting the technology's deployment will grow 25 percent by 2008, according to the annual Lehman Brothers Security Industry Report.
Other technologies projected to grow significantly by 2008 include smart cards and token cards (20 percent growth); video surveillance (15 percent); Homeland security detection equipment (15 percent); and electronic and photo access control systems (10 percent). The security services side of the market continues to undergo consolidation, the report says.
Other trends include:
The first real U.S. and foreign government orders for biometric systems are critical for creating the reference sites and beta tests that will be required for eventual major commercial adoption.
Surveillance is more reliant on software and networking systems to create “smart video.”
Equipment consolidation by large companies that want to centralize security functions are increasingly being performed by larger suppliers, whereas previously, most security decisions were made locally, depending on local installers and dealers that used a preferred brand.
Systems integration should see a 12-15 percent boost by 2008, according to the report. “There is an increasing need to integrate physical security systems with IT systems and human resource systems,” the report says. “Keep an eye out for continued consolidation of regional security systems integration companies.”
