Of the thousands of suspected shoplifters apprehended, many are falsely arrested or detained for unreasonable lengths of time. Suspects, store employees, customers and innocent bystanders are occasionally injured or even killed. Litigation often follows. Hence the best practice bulletin from the International Association of Professional Security Consultants, titled Detaining Shoplifting Suspects. The bulletin - the first in a series from the association - lists eight practices, with a rationale for using each. Subsequent documents will provide practical guidance to businesses and individuals on how best to deal with various security problems. The best practices are designed to reduce the likelihood of committing unwise or even illegal acts, thus reducing the risk of injuries, bad press and lawsuits. Upcoming best practice bulletin subjects include robbery prevention and similar issues of concern.Comprising security consultants who are not affiliated with any products or services, the International Association of Professional Security Consultants was founded in 1984 to heighten the professionalism of security practitioners and consultants.
