“You were right on point: The little things can eventually cost your company thousands or even millions of dollars.
I work as director of risk management for the State of Maryland's Department of Public Safety and Corrections. We once paid out a few thousand dollars on a injury on the job to a correctional officer for “mosquito bites!” In fact, the officer claimed it was the same mosquito! We had another whose claim that was, he was simply sitting in a chair, the chair ‘leaned backward and he fell out.’ We found out after several medical claims were paid that he was leaning the chair backwards against the wall, until the legs on the chair just slipped! The best so far I think was the officer who was punched in the nose by an inmate, breaking the nose, and the officer lost the ability to smell! The officer wanted nothing less than full retirement due to injury on the job.”
