The U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has awarded a contract for field testing of technology from QualComm Inc., San Diego, and Science Applications Intl. Corp., San Diego. The deal calls for field testing of untethered trailer asset management systems for high-security loads.

  • The Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles has chosen covert digital watermarking from Digimarc Corp., Tualatin, Ore., as a security enhancement for state-issued driver's licenses.

  • Airport authorities in Japan, Greece and Italy have ordered CTX series explosives detection systems from InVision Technologies Inc., Newark, Calif. The systems will be installed in the Central Japan International Airport, Athens International Airport and the Orio Al Serio International Airport in Bergamo, Italy.

  • The Federal Detention Center in Honolulu has selected a DVR management system from PI Vision, Orlando, Fla. The Second Eyes Enterprise solution was installed by systems integrator Sigcom, Greensboro, N.C.

  • The Arizona Department of Public Safety, Phoenix, has ordered additional facial recognition technology and lineup image enhancement tools from ImageWare Systems Inc., San Diego. The lineup enhancement tools enable the department to produce non-prejudicial lineups by making image backgrounds and head dimensions consistent.

  • The U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has ordered certified carry-on baggage X-ray screening systems outfitted with Threat Image Projection (TIP) from Rapiscan Inc., Hawthorne, Calif., to enhance security at U.S. airports.

  • Spedition Gras, a German distribution company, has installed a digital CCTV monitoring system from Geutebruck, Warwickshire, U.K. The company's warehouse is now monitored by 61 cameras feeding pictures to four MultiScope II units on an Ethernet.

  • The government of the Canadian province of Alberta has selected facial recognition technology from Viisage Technology Inc., Littleton, Mass., and ZN Vision Technologies AG, Bochum, Germany, to bring increased levels of identity fraud protection to its driver's license program.

  • The Chicago Police Department has chosen the Deputy-Dome camera system from Videolarm, Atlanta, for use in a community crime prevention program. The bullet-resistant domes will be mounted on light poles and other structures throughout the city.

  • The opening of Apple Computer's Magnificent Mile store in Chicago was protected thanks to the protection officers from Monterrey Security, Chicago. The opening included a concert by the band Cheap Trick, and the security firm will provide ongoing uniform protection services for the store.

  • The U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has chosen LaserCard optical memory cards from Drexler Technology Corp., Mountain View, Calif., for evaluation for use in the Transportation Workers Identification Credential (TWIC) program. The TSA's field testing phase should be concluded in late September.

  • The U.S. Bureau of Customs and Border Protection will purchase and test the Security Data Management System from VistaScape Security Systems, Atlanta, for automated intrusion detection along the U.S.-Mexico border.

  • The U.S. Supreme Court has chosen ID-Check technology from Intelli-Check Inc., Woodbury, N.Y., to be deployed for access control and the pre-screening of vendors and prospective employees.

  • Nine locations of Don Carter All-Star Bowling Lanes around the country have chosen the biometric HandPunch system from IR Recognition Systems, Campbell, Calif., to manage attendance for its 700-plus employees.
