SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTE CHOOSES CCTV FROM PI VISION

The Smithsonian Institute has chosen a CCTV monitoring system by PI Vision, Surrey, U.K. Ninety-six cameras will be initially installed at the Institute's Natural History Museum, followed by nine other sites.

Five Hy-Vee retail stores in the Kansas City area have implemented biometric identity verification systems from Biometric Access Corp. (BAC), Round Rock, Texas, for secure payroll check cashing services. Two of the stores also use the system to process personal check cashing transactions. Additionally, 99¢ Only stores in California, Nevada and Arizona have adopted a new employee time and attendance application featuring finger image readers from BAC.

The U.S. Marshals Service will implement a Loronix digital video solution from Verint Systems Inc., Woodbury, N.Y., as part of an overall increase in security at the jail and federal courthouse in Alexandria, Va. Additionally, a federal law enforcement agency in Europe has selected Verint's Reliant system, designed to enable analysis of intercepted communications from voice and fax sources.

French/Italian aerospace company Avions de Transport Regional (ATR) has selected composite material designed for the hardening of cockpit doors on aircraft from Telair Intl., Germany. The ballistics-resistant composite reinforces cockpit doors in compliance with security guidelines.

The Regional Transportation District of Denver has chosen Visual Security Operations Consoles (VSOC) from Boeing Autometric, Springfield, Va., a unit of Boeing Co. Boeing will install and configure three of the consoles at the district's central station to monitor four park-and-ride locations.

Transport for London has employed PSComm LLC, Rockville, Md., to create 20 safe corridors for buses, designed to reduce congestion and create a safe and orderly environment for bus riders. The project includes creating a transport police unit of more than 400 people and installing a central London command center.

The state of North Carolina has extended its contract with Viisage Technology Inc., Littleton, Mass., to provide driver's licenses and other identification documents. The state of Ohio has also extended a similar contract with the company. Additionally, the Massachusetts Cities Collaborative will implement Viisage's face recognition technology to assist the police during investigation and booking.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has ordered 50 CTX explosives detection systems and parts from InVision Technologies Inc., Newark, Calif., for implementation at U.S. airports.

An Australian state government agency responsible for issuing driver's licenses has chosen card printer/encoders from Fargo Electronics Inc., Minneapolis. The agency will use the systems to issue more than 5 million replacement driver's licenses in the next five years.

The U.S. Department of Transportation has purchased TIP-ready X-ray systems from Rapiscan Security Products Inc., Hawthorne, Calif., a subsidiary of OSI Systems Inc. The systems are outfitted with Threat Image Projection (TIP) software, designed to aid in training of security personnel by displaying a false threat object on the X-ray screen.

DHL Airways has chosen an anti-ballistic cockpit security door from USDR Global Aerospace Inc., Carson City, Nev., a subsidiary of Caring Products International Inc., for installation in its DC8 cargo aircraft. DHL is implementing the barriers in anticipation that the FAA will extend passenger aircraft flight deck security measures to air cargo carriers.

The U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) Office of Inspections has ordered live scan fingerprint systems from Identix Inc., Minnetonka, Minn., to conduct background checks on foreign nationals entering the country. Similar systems have also been ordered by two undisclosed government agencies.

The city of Winnepeg, Manitoba, has implemented a digital mobile surveillance system for taxis from Silent Witness, Surrey, B.C. The Manitoba Taxicab Board mandated that the cameras be installed. “In the two weeks [the cameras] have been in place, they have already captured images of a vicious assault and the attempted theft of a taxicab,” says Tim Lucko, chief inspector for the taxicab board.

The Pennsylvania State Police has implemented a state-wide Incident Information Management System (IIMS) from Lockheed Martin Management and Data Systems, King of Prussia, Pa. The IIMS will modernize data systems for the state's emergency call taking and dispatch, mobile computer software and investigative management systems. They will be installed in police vehicles and give state troopers instant access to state databases.

The Vancouver (Wash.) Police have successfully used a MobileView surveillance system from GE Interlogix Inc., Austin, Texas, to refute a passenger's claim that he was a passenger on a bus that crashed in June.

Cardiff International Airport, Wales, U.K., has chosen an access control and badge production system from CEM Systems, Belfast, N. Ireland, a unit of Tyco International's Fire and Security Division. The system includes more than 50 proximity readers to control movement through the airport.

Transmountain Oil LC, a fuel and lubricants supplier and operator of Howdy's Food Marts, has chosen remote management and security for its retail sites via CCTV cameras and a two-way audio system from Westec InterActive, Irvine, Calif. The initial installation was performed at 12 Shell or Texaco-branded sites with Howdy's stores in El Paso, Texas.

The Jacksonville (Fla.) International Airport has installed automatic doors in its baggage claim area from Stanley Access Technologies, New Britain, Conn. The airport plans to install similar doors in its ticket counter area.

Aramark, a provider of outsourcing services, has chosen the HandPunch 4000 Time and Attendance Terminal from IR Recognition Systems, Campbell, Calif., for installation at multiple sites throughout the U.S.

The Shanghai Mint has implemented a digital security system from Thakral Corp. Ltd., Singapore. The system, installed in three phases, includes monitoring stations and DVRs interconnected by an Ethernet.

U.S. Steel has selected a digital security system from Ionit Technologies, Northbrook, Ill., that monitors and records from a desktop computer. Not only does the system monitor security, it also enables managers to monitor the manufacturing process for troubleshooting.

Las Vegas' McCarran Airport has selected a video surveillance system from North American Video, Brick, N.J. The system will monitor the airport's parking toll plaza, allowing security and traffic personnel to view real-time video to keep watch on the steady flow of vehicles entering and exiting the airport.
