Seven airports in the United Kingdom — including London Heathrow, the world's busiest international airport — will be equipped with identification document authentication technology from Imaging Automation, Bedford, N.H.

The software, called iA-thenticate, determines whether or not a document is authentic, if it is expired, if it has been tampered with or if the photo or text matches any government watch lists of criminals or terrorists. British Airport Authority (BAA) will use the system to screen current and potential airport employees at each of its U.K. airports: Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Southampton.

“We recognize that document authentication in the hiring process introduces a level of security that is critical in maintaining the safest airports in the world,” says Ian Hutcheson, BAA director of security. “BAA currently screens its own 11,000-person workforce, and nearly 90,000 airline employees across the globe. With 20,000 new workers being issued airport badges each year, it is essential that BAA authenticate the identity of each individual.”
