Study finds hospitals at risk
Sep 1, 2000 12:00 PM, AC&SSI STAFF
A recent study found that most hospitals face threats of violent crime, defined as rape, robbery, homicide and aggravated assault. The country- wide, 920-hospital study was conducted by CAP Index Inc., King of Prussia, Pa., a provider of crime risk forecasting and vulnerability analysis, in conjunction with the International Association for Healthcare Security and Safety (IAHSS).
Nearly two-thirds of the hospitals surveyed are located in areas with above-average or average risk of violent crime. "It is sadly ironic to think that patients, staff and visitors can be at greater risk of being victims of violent crime when they are in healthcare institutions," says Robert Figlio, CAP chairman and CEO.
The results appear in the Summer 2000 edition of the Journal of Healthcare Protection Management, an IAHSS publication.
