System Enhanced With Old Wires

South Florence High School in South Carolina has enhanced its video surveillance system with new equipment from Network Video Technologies, Menlo Park, Calif. The technology allows the transmission of video signals from cameras to monitors via existing unshielded twisted pair (UTP) wire.

“South Florence High School wanted a state-of-the-art surveillance system that was extremely reliable and offered excellent picture quality,” says Jim Finger, Jr., president and CEO of Georgia-based Network Digital Security, which installed the NVT system.

NVT's transmitters, transceivers, receivers and hubs allow the use of new or existing UTP wire, Category 2 or better. This enables end-users and installers to deliver a high-quality picture with quick installation.

In most video transmission applications, coaxial cable is more difficult to install, resulting in higher labor charges. It is also less dependable.“The reason coax is less reliable is that you have to crimp the end of the coax cable for the connector.Over time, this reduces the reliability and the strength of the signal,” Finger says.

Using NVT's UTP solution, South Florence High School is transmitting video signals between 150 feet indoors to 700 feet with outdoor cameras using Category 5 twisted pair wire.

As part of its security upgrade, South Florence High School replaced several time-lapse VCRs with new digital recorders and cameras to monitor campus activity.
