Tech Watch
Nov 1, 2006 12:00 PM
The latest security products and solutions were on display at this year's ISC East exhibition in New York City Oct. 24 and 25. A smaller version of the spring ISC West show in Las Vegas, this year's “East” show benefited from its co-location with the sister InfoSecurity show, thus emphasizing convergence. Here are some of the new products featured at the show. Surveillance software and cameras, emergency response tools and biometrics were among the “techy” innovations.
Portable Command-and-Control Computer
AN ALL-IN-ONE EMERGENCY COMMUNICATION AND RESPONSE UNIT
The CATCHER or Communications And Telemetry Computing Handheld for Emergency Response device from Catcher Inc. combines GPS, voice, data, video, biometrics and communications into a mobile computer unit for use in emergency situations. Features include Ethernet, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS capability; full motion video capture at 30 frames-per-second; digital still image capture, a biometric fingerprint scanner, a 6.4-in. sunlight-readable display; and a speaker, microphone and headset jack. The device is built on Microsoft's Windows XP Professional operating system with pen and tablet extensions. The system also includes an emergency alert theft protection system. The unit measures 10.5 in. × 7.75 in. × 2.75 in. and weighs 5.8 lbs. www.catcherinc.com

Fingerprint Reader
READS BELOW THE SURFACE LEVEL
Silex Technology's S1 Fingerprint Reader with a USB interface reads below the fingerprint surface level at the corium or inner layer of skin, where fingerprint patterns remain consistent. Skin conditions such as skin damage, dirt and dryness can make surface-level fingerprint patterns unreadable. The reader has an “anti-spoofing” capability and will not read “gummy fingers” or other methods used to “spoof” fingerprint readers. The device can store data from five fingers per user and stores fingerprint data for a total of 32 users. The system is supported by Windows 2000 and Windows XP operating systems. www.silexamerica.com

Hard Drive for Video Surveillance
STORES 24/7 VIDEO IN HIGH-WRITE-DUTY APPLICATIONS
Seagate Technology's SV35 Series hard drive for surveillance digital video recording (SDVR) has a capacity to store large amounts of data generated from video surveillance applications. The 3.5-in. hard drive can store up to 100 days of compressed JPEG surveillance video (640×40 at 1 frame-per-second) and up to 23 days of compressed MPEG4 video (720×480 at 30 frames-per-second). The drives are available in three storage capacities: 160, 250 or 500 GB. Best-fit applications include SDVRs, video surveillance network digital video recorders (SNVR), direct-attached JBOD video storage, network-attached JBOD video storage and small form-factor SDVRs. The SV35 Series is compatible with UDMA-2, -3 and -4 chipsets and offers Serial ATA options. The system is designed to reduce power consumption, lower heat dissipation, improve reliability and allow the use of low-cost, high-efficiency power supplies. www.seagate.com
