Today's security officers need to be techno-savvy, and Atlanta-based Barton Protective Services has several technology training initiatives under way.

Using e-learning and computer-based training to develop its security officers nationwide, the programs are designed to provide added value to Barton's customers and emphasize the company's role as a learning organization. In the past year, Barton has contracted with a national “e-learning” consultant and developed a computer-based approach to delivering in-service technical training and competency development to officers. The consultant assessed needs and is working with Barton on a multi-year strategy to increase the knowledge of its officers.

According to John Garrigan, senior vice president of people development, “Barton has one of the highest employee and customer retention rates in the nation” due to the company's ongoing commitment to continued education.

Barton also is installing “Tech-Knowledge-y” labs in its branch offices nationwide to allow every officer to participate in e-learning. Barton's Silicon Valley Training Academy was the first to open a computer training center, where employees may take part in instructor-led training, a library of CD-ROM tutorials and specialized programs.

“Barton's goal is to become one of the top learning organizations in the country through the use of technology, advanced learning models and training programs,” says Garrigan. “Through these programs, we can drive value to our customers and employees.”
