Effective Physical Security, Third Edition by Lawrence J. Fennelly, Butterworth-Heinemann, 2004.

While providing a wealth of practical information on physical security and the process of securing a facility, the third edition adds new chapters on risk assessment and management, security lighting, entry control, contraband detection, management of bomb incidents and Homeland security. Chapters cover security surveys, locks, alarms and CCTV, each written by a specialist in the field. Specifically, Chapter 5 — devoted to Crime Prevention through Environmental Design (CPTED) strategies — includes illustrations depicting effective security design from downtown streets and outdoor sitting areas to pedestrian malls, parking lots, office buildings and schools. A full chapter dedicated to cargo security (Chapter 15) is also informative, complete with a “Cargo Security Checklist” suitable for facility managers to use as a security survey pertaining to his or her own establishment and/or location. The book features multiple appendices, checklists and glossaries to organize key information.

Lawrence J. Fennelly is an independent security consultant in Milton, Mass. A graduate of the National Crime Prevention Institute, Fennelly is a member of the International Society of Crime Prevention Practitioners and ASIS International. He is the author of more than 15 books on security and crime prevention.

Rethinking Corporate Security In The Post 9/11 Era: Issues and Strategies for Today's Global Business Community by Dennis R. Dalton, Butterworth-Heinemann, 2003.

Touted as “a provocative treatise outlining the real corporate security challenges in the wake of 9/11,” Dalton's book provides a new paradigm for success for security managers and business leaders in the corporate environment. The book “details a bold blueprint” for assessing a security program's effectiveness, including risk-assessment models and strategic planning concepts. The “Evolution of Security” outlines the metamorphosis of the security department — from the Green Shack era to the Total Asset Protection era — which incidentally mirrors the evolving role of security post-Sept. 11. From “Selecting the Right Leader for Your Security Program” to “Formulating Your Game Plan,” Dalton applies classic business and management strategies to the corporate security management function.

Dennis R. Dalton is president of Dalton Affiliates Inc., a management consulting firm based in Fremont, Calif. He is the author of many manuals, articles, videos and books, including “Security Management: Business Strategies for Success” (Butterworth-Heinemann, Burlington, Mass., 1995) and “The Art of Successful Security Management” (Butterworth-Heinemann, Burlington, Mass., 1997).
