SPOTLIGHT: SigniShell Biometric Signature Pad

The Signishell biometric signature pad from Card Scanning Solutions was designed for identity authentication. The signature pad captures and calculates the pressure, acceleration, speed and rhythm used in the act of signing to create a distinct personal identifier for each signer. By recording these measurements, the technology “learns” to accurately recognize a user's authentic signature despite slight variations. The pad can also recognize forgeries even with superficial similarities.

“While someone may be able to superficially forge a signature, they aren't going to be able to duplicate the process and biometrics of the act of signing in the exact same way,” says Rob Hudson, Card Scanning Solutions product manager. “So even if someone can create a masterful forgery as perceived by the human eye, our technology looks at the biometrics of signing and flags it as a fake.” Hudson adds that customers might view a request for a signature as less invasive and more socially acceptable than asking for a fingerprint. The signatures are encrypted, compressed and stored in a database, smart card or token device.
