Are you sure the guy working on your video surveillance system knows his stuff?

The National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET) has just released three new exams in the Video Security Systems (VSS) suite that will make it easier to distinguish a certified technician from a fly-by-night wannabe.

The new certifications enable technicians and designers to distinguish themselves and their qualifications; employers to hire and promote with greater confidence; and end-users to have the assurance that those who design, install and service their systems have met a nationally-based set of qualifications.

A coalition including the Security Industry Association (SIA), the National Systems Contractors Association (NSCA), PSA Security Network; and companies such as Pelco, Bosch Security Systems, Tyco Fire and Security, Panasonic, Dedicated Micros and others designed the certification program to promote technical knowledge and skills. The resulting program lays out career paths for VSS technicians and designers and helps supply industries and employers with a credentialed workforce.

NICET's career track philosophy provides a valuable credential for the entry-level person and for the most experienced designers and technicians in the VSS industry.

Certification at particular levels is achieved by demonstrating knowledge and experience working with specific video security systems. One type is a basic system with standard components, low bandwidth transmission, and menu-driven set-up. Another type of system can include specialized components, programmable controls, and high bandwidth transmission. A third type of system can include PCs, serial communication and wireless transmission.
