Among a sample of more than 24,000 applicants screened for holiday retail positions, one in 10 were not hired because they had a criminal background, according to Pinkerton Services Group, a business unit of Pinkerton, Encino, Calif.
Of those, nearly one-third had been convicted of a violent crime such as assault, resisting arrest or a weapons violation. Twenty-six percent had a drug-related conviction, and 24 percent had a record for theft. Pinkerton analyzed the results of background checks conducted for its retail clients during September, October and November 1997 - peak holiday hiring time.
"Informed retailers are realizing that pre-employment screening increases their likelihood of hiring loyal, trustworthy workers with a strong work ethic," says Fred Giles, vice president of Pinkerton Services Group. "This translates into better protection for their assets, customers and employees."
