Buffalo to start school year with new security chief
Sep 13, 2006 12:30 PM
Buffalo Schools Superintendent Dr. James Williams, Mayor Byron Brown and Police Commissioner H. McCarthy Gipson have announced a new school security plan to coincide with the start of the school year. The plan calls for creating a new position, Chief of School Safety.
Tensions among some of the city's young people, some that resulted in homicides, had the potential to spill over into the school year, Williams says -- one of the reasons for the safety plan.
The $84-87,000 Chief of School Safety position would have to approved by city officials. The plan also calls for establishing a new security detail using the police department's Flex Unit. Also, it calls for cracking down on the dress code. Kids can no longer wear red or blue tee shirts or bandanas, the colors commonly identified with gang members.
Adding to the plan is the removal of graffiti and dilapidated housing near school grounds to create more green space and parking. "A safe school is a healthy school," Williams tells WGRZ News of Buffalo.
