GE considers security business a good bet
Jul 14, 2006 2:39 PM
General Electric Co.'s head security executive recently said that the company expected to boost sales of security-related products to from $2 billion in 2006 to $2.8 billion by 2009.
"When you think of the infrastructure build going on in India and China, that is going to create huge demand," said Louis Parker, president and CEO of GE Security, speaking at GE's Global Research Center, in upstate New York.
Parker added that increased use of sophisticated computers could free human employees from the drudgery of watching television monitors. Parker said the company is currently working on video surveillance systems that can identify suspicious activity, scanners to establish the danger of unknown substances and a luggage scanner that utilizes CT-scan technology to inspect checked baggage.
"Gone are the days that you had people sitting back in the rooms and looking at cameras," Parker said.
