School district conducts crisis management exercises
Mar 27, 2006 3:07 PM
For spring break in the Jefferson County School District -- home of Columbine High School -- school personnel and law enforcement are conducting crisis-management exercises at the district's 148 schools.
Similar exercises will be conducted in June, Gregg Bramblett, executive director of the Safety, Security and Emergency Planning Department for the district, tells the San Bernadino County Sun.
Bramblett and district offcials helped craft a District Emergency Plan after the Columbine tragedy. It is a template that includes flip charts on every type of incident: emergency, weather, violence, hazardous materials and bomb threats. Each school must update the plan annually.
The crisis management exercises have a hint of war games as officials participate in table-top exercises. They gather around a table with a layout of the floor plan of a school.
There are no metal detectors in use, but physical security enhancements have been added, including CCTV and card access, Bramblett tells the newspaper.
