The ASIS Commission on Standards and Guidelines recently released two new guidelines: the second edition of the Chief Security Officer Guideline and the second edition of the Threat Advisory System Response (TASR) Guideline.

The Chief Security Officer Guideline is a model for organizations developing a leadership position for a comprehensive, integrated security strategy that contributes to the viability and success of the organization.

The reference section of the guideline incorporates new research papers; a “Next Generation Security Leadership” model developed by the Security Executive Council through interviews with business leaders; and a comprehensive 2007 salary study.

It also includes information on the scope of the chief security officer position, reporting relationships, a model profile chart and the job’s key responsibilities and accountabilities. It also provides the competencies necessary for the successful chief security officer, the experience that should be considered when hiring and the education chief security officers need.

The Chief Security Officer Guideline applies to both private- and public-sector environments, both of which constantly evaluate and respond to the increasing and changing risks organizations are experiencing worldwide. It is also the basis for the proposed Chief Security Officer Organizational American National Standard being developed by ASIS’ Chief Security Officer Standards committee.

Also recently released by ASIS International is a second edition of the TASR Guideline, developed to provide private-sector organizations with security measures they might implement during elevated Alert Levels announced by the Department of Homeland Security.

The TASR Guideline is divided into four major sections, which correspond to threat levels. Each section includes three subcategories: emergency response/business continuity, personnel protection and physical protection. According to ASIS, the guideline’s detailed worksheet format will help managers determine those steps that apply to specific security environments.

The expanded TASR Guideline includes items such as preparations for people with special needs or disabilities and the inclusion of training protocols and emergency equipment such as first-aid kits.

The first editions of both guidelines were published in 2004. All ASIS Guidelines are re-evaluated and updated, if necessary, every three years.

Both guidelines are available at asisonline.org/guidelines/guidelines.htm.
