ASIS Grants Atlanta High School With Security Funds

Henry W. Grady High School, located in Midtown Atlanta, has installed a network of surveillance cameras with money awarded to the school by ASIS International, the preeminent organization for security management professionals worldwide. Grady was given $20,000 for security improvements after winning ASIS’ School Security Funding Competition. The state-of-the-art cameras will to help officials identify trespassers and students who violate school policies.

The competition was launched in conjunction with ASIS International’s 54th Annual Seminar and Exhibits, held last week.

The school purchased four exterior cameras and six interior cameras. The exterior cameras, which can monitor two miles out, are a first for the school. The pan-tilt-zoom cameras are located on top of the Charles Allen Building, the Eighth Street wing, the music building and the practice gym. The new interior cameras supplement existing cameras and monitor areas in the Charles Allen Building and the Eighth Street wing.

Grady’s safety and security team will monitor the cameras via two new flat-screen monitors, their individual laptops and on their cell phones.

The ASIS School Security Funding Competition was open to all high schools in the Atlanta Public Schools system. In a series of essays, school administrators were asked to assess the level of security on their campuses, discuss how particular security concerns impacted their educational goals for students and suggest how they would use the prize money to address those concerns and improve their school’s overall security. A committee comprised of security management professionals from the ASIS Atlanta Chapter judged the competition and selected Grady as the winner.

Dr. Vincent Murray, principal at Grady, and other APS officials were recognized at an ASIS awards luncheon on Sept. 18 at the Georgia World Congress Center.

This is the fifth year ASIS has sponsored the competition as a way of giving back to the community, and simultaneously encouraging local schools to assess the security issues that confront their buildings, staff and students everyday.
