Published by the National Biometric Security Project (NBSP), the Biometric Technology Application Manual (BTAM) is a comprehensive reference manual on biometric technology applications.
This reference work, in two volumes, has been compiled for biometric technology users and for those who are evaluating the integration of biometrics into new or existing security systems. The BTAM is intended to be a rational and practical tool for those who specify, buy, integrate, operate, and manage biometric technology-based systems.
"With the expanded deployment of biometric technologies to achieve greater identity assurance, the need for an authoritative and regularly-updated reference and database on virtually all aspects of biometrics is a pressing requirement," says John E. Siedlarz, NBSP chairman and CEO.
BTAM Volume 1 is a comprehensive primer on biometrics. Key topic areas include:
* Fundamentals of biometric technologies and how they work;
* Charts summarizing the comparison of various biometric modalities;
* The biometric system design process including operational considerations and performance expectations;
* A detailed review of biometric standards development processes supplemented with summaries of published and emerging standards;
* In-depth review of current testing protocols and system evaluation including performance measures and compliance with standards; and
* Analysis of the various societal issues -- legal, privacy, and user psychology -- that are critical to selecting and implementing a successful biometric-based security and identification management solution.
Currently in development, BTAM Volume 2 moves from the fundamental information about biometrics to more specific case studies and applications. Volume 2 focuses on what a buyer/end-user needs to know to make an informed purchase decision.
This is supplemented with case studies of biometric technologies -- why the technology worked (or didn't work); and why it was chosen over other options. Applications presented will include both U.S. and international deployments, and include civil infrastructure (both government and private sector), state and regional, and urban and local examples. Volume 2 is scheduled for publication in the first quarter of 2007.
BTAM, Vol. 1 is available in hard copy (three-ring binder) and digital (cd) versions from NBSP. Visit www.nationalbiometric.org and click on BTAM for information.
