Reports Show Electronic Access Control, Biometric Sales To Grow
Jul 24, 2007 3:56 PM
Driven by the threat of terrorism, the need for securing business assets and employees and a stringent legislative environment, the market for electronic access control systems is set to reach $6.1 billion by 2010, according to a report by Global Industry Analysts Inc.
Even with maturity in the industrial, residential and commercial sectors, sales of electronic access control systems is one of the fastest growing sectors of the security industry. There is also a growing demand for heterogeneous technologies for security applications, and RFID technology is expected to contribute to market expansion.
The United States is the largest market worldwide, worth an estimated $2.2 billion in 2007. Europe is the second largest regional market followed by the Asian market at third position. Europe and the United States together account for more than 80 percent of the global electronic access control systems market as stated by Global Industry Analysts Inc. The global and regional markets are expected to grow between 15 and 20 percent per year. Card Based electronic access, including proximity and smart cards, represents the leading product segment, capturing more than 65 percent share of value sales. The segment is expected to register sales of about $3.5 billion by 2010.
The global marketplace is characterized by companies such as Aiphone Co, ASSA-ABLOY, BIO-key International Inc., Chubb Securite S.A.S, DigitalPersona, GE Security, Gunnebo AB, Hirsch Electronics Corp., Honeywell Access Systems, Ingersoll Rand Recognition Systems Inc., International Electronics Inc., Kaba Group, L-1 Identity Solutions, Motorola/Printrak International Inc., NAPCO Security Systems Inc., PAC International Ltd, SAFLINK Corp., SAFRAN Group, SecuGen Corp., Sentex Systems, Siemens Building Technologies/Bewator Ltd and others.

Biometric solutions are also making fast inroads because of their edge over conventional authentication solutions such as passwords, PINs and tokens. The market for smart cards is also projected to grow especially in banking, mass transit, building, network security and identification sectors. Another report by Global Industry Analysts Inc. shows that biometric sales are to exceed $6.48 billion by 2010.
Increasing security concerns ranging from individual identity theft, and corporate security, to national security are driving the biometrics market. Driven by these factors, and decreasing costs of biometric systems, the market is witnessing high double-digit growth rates across all regions.
Government initiatives could emerge as the key to driving growth of biometrics. Some countries have already put biometric systems at airports and other ports of entry to check flow of illegal immigrants into their respective territories. On the technological front, non-contact systems could emerge as the solution to user inhibitions.
Development of industry-wide standards has been initiated, which would lead to lower costs and enable easier adoption of present and emerging technologies. Besides a few large corporations such as Motorola, and Siemens, a large number of small companies are active in the industry. As the industry attains critical mass, larger technology companies are likely to enter the industry, bringing with them scale, and technological expertise, and mergers and acquisitions would be the ideal way to enter the market.
Major competitors profiled include 3M-AiT Ltd., A4Vision, AcSys Biometrics Corp., AuthenTec Inc., BIO-key International Inc., Biometric Access Corp., Biometric Security Ltd., Bioscrypt Inc., Cogent Systems, Communication Intelligence Corp., Diaphonics Inc., Fujitsu Microelectronics America, L-1 Identity Solutions, Inc., Motorola, NEC Corporation of America, Precise Biometrics, SAFLINK Corp., SAGEM Defense Securite, Sensory Inc., Siemens AG, TSSI, Veridicom Inc. and Visiphor Corp.
