The recently completed school year has been a deadly one. According to preliminary data from the National School Safety and Security Services, a Cleveland-based group that tracks school violence, 48 school-related violent deaths occurred from August through June.
That's more than in the past two school years combined, and more than in any year in the past decade.
There were eight incidents of school violence and other high-profile crimes during June alone. One incident, June 26 in Rochester, N.Y., involved two people being stabbed at a graduation ceremony.
The 2002-2003 school year saw 16 violent deaths in and around schools, down from 17 the previous year, the report says. In all, there were 23 shootings in 2003-2004, as compared to 22 shootings in the past three school years combined.
School-related deaths are defined as not just violence by students but any homicide or suicide on school property, on the way to or from school or while attending or traveling to or from a school-sponsored event.
