Security Favored Over Privacy
Aug 7, 2007 4:08 PM
With the eyes of big brother following Americans, the debate grows over security versus privacy in the United States. Critics question the high costs and privacy issues that come with such heavy surveillance.
An ABC/Washington Post poll says 71 percent of Americans favor the increased use of surveillance cameras.
The poll was conducted by telephone among a random national sample of 1,125 adults.
The question was worded, "Some people support the use of surveillance cameras in public places as a way to help solve crimes. Others say these cameras go too far as a government intrusion on personal privacy. What's your opinion - do you support or oppose the increased use of surveillance cameras in public places?"
Twenty-five percent opposed.
Cities across the United States -- from Charlottesville, Va. to Oakland, Calif. - are thinking about putting up cameras. Such cameras are already in use all over London.
