The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) has petitioned the Federal Aviation Administration to require pilots to carry government-issued photo identification in order to pilot an aircraft.

The plan is designed to ease security concerns, as security personnel can match the ID with an official FAA pilot certificate to positively identify legitimate pilots. The pilots' ID can be as simple as a driver's license or passport.

The AOPA is asking the plan be implemented in 30 days.

"It addresses the security need to positively identify pilots, and it will cost next to nothing," AOPA president Phil Boyer said. "It makes good sense."
