American Airlines chief executive Donald Carty said another terrorist attack against commercial airlines is unlikely and urged some security measures be dropped at airports in a speech given to the American Chamber of Commerce in Tokyo.

A clarification issued by the airline states that Carty was merely calling upon the government to stop those types of measures that have "little security value," such as prolonged searches of flight crews and airport employees.

However, in an Associated Press report, Carty is quoted as saying: "With the amount of security that we have in the aviation system today, the likelihood of a terrorist choosing aviation as the venue for future attacks is very low. When you compare security across many venues, the airline industry is enormously well secured."

According to the clarification: "Mr. Carty is calling upon the government to be smarter in the ways it approaches security, and doing fewer of those things that may cosmetically appear to translate into security, but are not as effective as other measures the government could adopt."
