Biometric technologies are being integrated into security and access control systems based on closed circuit television (CCTV) surveillance, identification cards, swipe cards and wireless microchips, according to a recent Frost and Sullivan report.

"In addition to lower costs, smaller devices, and better integration, analysts believe that network administrators are beginning to realize the advantages of biometric devices versus password-authentication systems," says Technical Insights Analyst James Smith of Frost and Sullivan.

The biometrics industry has also benefited from the use of electronic signatures. The biometrics services and hardware industries expanded from $300 million to 1997 to more than $1 billion this year. E-signatures will boost demand for stronger online identity verification and authentication.
