A recent report from the Institute of Management and Administration's (IOMA) Security Director Report survey predicts the use of biometrics will continue to increase.

Among respondents of the survey (a panel of security directors), 20 percent currently use biometrics, and the number of non-users who plan to add biometrics in the next five years exceeds the number who said biometrics is not in their company's foreseeable future. More than half of the respondents say they will or already have chosen fingerprint technology - the most popular choice of technology in the realm of biometrics. Hand geometry readers were second.

"Security directors at companies in industries such as health care and banking are more aggressively looking at biometric solutions," says Garett Seivold, editor of the report. "The key for vendors is to understand the challenges end-users face in different industries, and target companies for which their biometric application is a good fit."

Among those not currently using biometrics, 18 percent said they will be ready to purchase the devices in the next two years.
