Casio Computer and Alps Electric have developed a fingerprint scanner built into a short cylinder for use in cellular telephones and other portable devices.
The cylinder produces a monochrome fingerprint image at 600 dpi. It is expected to retail around $83 per unit.
Casio becomes the second manufacturer to add biometric identification to portable electronics. Hewlett-Packard built a fingerprint scanner into one of its iPaq PDA's last year.
