ESSEX Industries has made availabile an American Institute of Architects Continuing Education System (AIA/CES) registered course on treating security as an aspect of building design, entitled "Components of a Holistic Building Security Program."

Participants will be introduced to the different components of building security — procedures, physical barriers, security options and systems design. The course emphasizes a "holistic" approach that integrates all of these different components into a comprehensive building security program. The program also stresses planning for security early in the design phase of new facility projects, an important new trend in architecture.

Specific topics include many types of security systems and electronic detection equipment such as card access control, locks, exit devices, metal detectors, surveillance cameras (CCTV) and lighting. The program also addresses the "softer" side of security, including prevention and crisis preparedness planning, and the role of policies in critical areas such as visitors and key management.

Participants learn where to find all of these and other program components and how to specify them. More information is available from T.J. Gottwalt at 203-499-6838 or tgottwalt@essexopenings.com.
