President Bush signed legislation last week, dedicating more than $900 million over five years to security research and education to protect the nation's technology infrastructure against hackers and terrorists.
The Cyber Security Research and Development Act will establish computer security research centers and fellowship programs at the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).
Funding for the bill has been touted as essential to defending against terrorists who may target vital communications networks, says Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) and Rep. Sherwood Boehlert (R-N.Y.), who sponsored the Senate and House versions of the bill.
