The Port of Long Beach, which handles 43 percent of the nation's container cargo traffic, is plagued by poor security and other lapses that make the port vulnerable to attack, the Orange County Register reports.
Port officials are concerned because there is no efficient system to screen some cargo containers, and the port has a shortage of police patrols and surveillance cameras.
Port officials sought more than $70 million in federal security funding to correct the oversights, but received just $6 million.
