A group representing many U.S. cargo airline pilots wants Congress to pass a proposed law that would allow cargo-plane crews to carry guns, giving them the same opportunity to protect themselves as passenger crews.

The cargo pilots were deleted from the legislation that created a test program for passenger crews, but three representatives have introduced a bill that would extend the plan to freight haulers.

"Passage of this legislation is a critical step that must be taken to make our aviation system safer," said Captain John Safley of the Coalition of Airline Pilots Association. "This legislation recognizes the important role that the pilot can play in protecting the cockpit and the plane."
