Republican congressman James Greenwood called the computer security at the U.S. Department of Commerce "deplorable," after releasing a report saying America’s business secrets are vulnerable to hackers.

The report, prepared by the General Accounting Office, states the Department of Commerce fails on all security fronts — failing to detect, prevent and respond to attacks.

Greenwood (R-Pa.), who is chairman of the House Commerce Committee’s oversight panel, added that investigators uncovered an undetected hacker attack during the inquiry.

"GAO’s hackers gained access to one system, only to find that a Russian hacker had been there before them," Greenwood said. "The state of the department’s security was truly deplorable."

The GAO report says "individuals, both within and outside Commerce, could gain unauthorized access to these systems and read, copy, modify and delete sensitive economic, financial, personnel and confidential business data."
