A new Port Security Grants program allotting more than $93 million in funding for security upgrades at seaports has been approved. The Maritime Association and the U.S. Coast Guard will administer the program.

"We're pleased Congress has recognized the tremendous need for Federal help at U.S. seaports and appropriated emergency funding for security enhancements," said Kurt J. Nagle, president of the American Association of Port Authorities.

Ports can now submit grant applications in two categories: security assessments and mitigation strategies; and enhanced facility and operational security -- which includes access control, physical, cargo and passenger security.
