ACCESS CONTROL & SECURITY SYSTEMS
EDITORIAL GUIDELINES
Now more than ever, commercial, industrial, institutional and governmental facilities are looking for security systems to make their sites, people and assets more secure.
ACCESS CONTROL & SECURITY SYSTEMS is the leading franchise for security applications coverage. In addition to the core publication, its award-winning editorial team offers Security Beat e-newsletter, securitysolutions.com, Government Security, the Government Security Report e-newsletter, GovtSecurity.com and the Security Industry Sourcebook.
WHAT WORKS: APPLICATION/CASE HISTORY ARTICLES
Much of the content of ACCESS CONTROL & SECURITY SYSTEMS is made up of application/case history articles that focus on commercial, industrial and institutional security end-users. These articles describe how end-users incorporate hardware and software technologies to help meet their security needs.
We welcome the submission of installation/case history features from manufacturers and companies that deal in integrated security systems. Stories must focus on end-users of security systems, explaining why particular system(s) fit a facility's needs.
The following format is suggested.
1. An installation feature will be a description of a facility's integrated security system, beginning with a description of the security challenges and the steps taken to solve them.
2. The feature should include interviews with site security managers, specifiers, consultants and installers.
3. Please provide our readers a comprehensive look at the system hardware and software selected and how it was adapted to fit the facility's needs.
4. Names, addresses, phone numbers, contact persons and their job titles should be provided for the manufacturers and for the users.
Articles may focus on a supplier's product or systems, but the article should also include other components integrated into the facility's security system. Various supplier company names and brand names should be included.
The feature should be approximately 1,500 words, typed and double spaced. Articles may also be submitted via e-mail.
Identified photos (digital format - 300 dpi in a standard format, at least 3 inches wide), charts or artwork should accompany these feature articles. (For more information, see GUIDELINES FOR SUBMITTING ART below.)
All correspondence about articles should be directed to:

OTHER SECTIONS
FRONTLINES
This section in the front of the magazine has the subtitle “Need-to-know information for security professionals.” It is a how-to/ hints of the trade/ technology trends section that is written to the reader in the second person – telling “you” what “you” can learn from others, etc. Writing style is more featurey/stylized and not so “journalistic.” Goal of the section is to get readers’ attention, “grab them by the collar and say ‘You need to know this!’”
This section is a combination of short and longer pieces, with an emphasis on conciseness, bullet lists, and action items. Submissions should not exceed 500 words. The person (source) and company submitting the article will be identified and contact information is sometimes included. Many items in the section are technology-related, and technology suppliers (manufacturers) are invited to submit information for this section. Appropriate topics might include the following …
* Misconceptions about a certain product category.
* Trends that will direct product choices in the future.
* A step-by-step how-to list.
* A smart solution to a common problem among security professionals.
* A look at emerging technology trends or innovation that is on the horizon.
* A diagram, schematic, etc. that illuminates a technology issue or category.
BACK TO BASICS
New people enter the security industry every day, many of them from non-technology fields such as law enforcement and the military. One of our magazine’s goals is to shed light on technology for these non-technical readers in a way that is understandable, accessible and related to management issues. Our “Back To Basics” section is an opportunity to explain to these non-technical readers everything they need to know about a technology subject. Any submitted article must not be brand-specific to a certain supplier, but should be generic and discuss the range of available products (not just one supplier’s product line). The topic should be narrow enough to receive meaningful treatment in the allotted space.
The article can be “how-to” or it can be formatted something like “The Idiot’s Guide to BLANK” (not to say our readers are idiots, just emphasizing the need to be very basic.) These articles should be 1200-1500 words, and the topic should be discussed in advance with the editor. A byline will be provided for the author, who ideally is a product category “expert” (not a marketing person) from the supplier company. A 30-word author’s biography will also be included. We ask for photographs or diagrams or other graphics to accompany the article, if possible.
OTHER FEATURES
Access Control & Security Systems produces a variety of staff-written articles, including the monthly “Infosec” feature and the monthly cover story. Supplier companies and others are invited to look at our editorial calendar and to suggest possible interview sources for any of the topics appearing there. Please e-mail the editor at landerson@securitysolutions.com to recommend a source. Please identify the source, include contact information and summarize briefly what information/commentary the source could contribute to the article. The editor will forward this information to the person writing the article, who will follow up as appropriate. We need to identify sources as soon as possible, preferably three months ahead of when the planned article will appear.
NEW PRODUCT LISTINGS
