The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has given $1,150,000 in grants to 10 Ohio drinking water systems to help improve security planning. Each utility received $115,000.

"Helping protect America's drinking water from terrorist attack has become one of our most important missions," said EPA Regional Administrator Tom Skinner.

In response to the attacks of Sept. 11, the EPA received a supplemental appropriation from Congress to improve the safety and security of the nation's water supply. The nearly $90 million is intended to reduce the vulnerability of water utilities to terrorist attacks and to help enhance their security and ability to respond to emergency situations. Development of a vulnerability assessment is the highest priority.
