Federal investigators are examining the security measures taken by university and biological research labs across the country for vulnerabilities against thieves and hackers. The investigation, which was prompted by the recent unsolved anthrax attacks, has led officials to suspect that the attacks may have originated at a U.S. biological laboratory.

An unidentified federal official told The Associated Press that labs at about 10 universities are undergoing monthly inspections by auditors from the Office of the Inspector General at the Department of Health and Human Services. Those inspections focus on physical security -- including information security -- at the laboratories.

A spokesperson for the Inspector General told The AP that the lab security reviews will not be published due to national security implications.
