Grants awarded to urban areas, metro transit authorities

The Department of Homeland Security will allocate $725 million for the Urban Area Security Initiative (UASI), in grants to urban areas to enhance their overall security and preparedness level to prevent, respond and recover from acts of terrorism.

As part of a commitment to directing funds to areas with greater security needs, $675 million will be allocated to urban areas selected by DHS. The urban areas are chosen based on a formula that takes into account factors including critical infrastructure, population density and credible threat information.

The top 10 urban areas in terms of funding are: New York City ($47 million); Chicago ($34 million); Washington, D.C. ($29 million); Los Angeles ($28 million); San Francisco ($26 million); Philadelphia ($23 million); Houston ($19.9 million); Miami ($19 million); Boston ($19 million); and Jersey City, N.J. ($17 million).

Fifty million dollars has been allocated for mass transit security agencies. The transit systems were determined based upon the number of annual riders and overall track mileage.

New York City Transit leads the funding with $10 million. Other major transit agencies to receive funding are: Chicago METRA ($3 million); Washington, D.C. WMATA ($2.8 million); New York's Long Island rail and Metro-North transit ($5.3 million combined). In all, 15 transit agencies will receive more than $1 million.
