The following excerpt is taken from Ward's Auto World, a sister publication of Access control and Security Systems:

Like it or not, electronic devices ranging from fingerprint readers to the familiar key fob are rapidly replacing the traditional insert-and-turn key in the automotive market.

Ward's Automotive Reports notes that during the past 10 years, the installation rate of remote keyless entry (RKE) systems on U.S.-made cars has steadily risen from a little more than 10 percent in 1991 to almost 70 percent by the end of last year. Installation rates rose earlier and faster on vehicles in Europe and Japan.

Most industry experts expect passive, "hands-free" keyless entry systems to follow a similar growth curve.

How would they work? Your vehicle recognizes you, or a so-called electronic "smart card" tucked in your pocket or purse, and opens up automatically - and locks itself when you leave. No more searching for keys.
