The HIPAA Academy, in partnership with Thompson NETg, has introduced targeted training programs designed to help organizations meet the security compliance regulations of the U.S. Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).

HIPAA mandates that all health care organizations -- including providers, health plans, insurers, vendors, universities and others -- comply with information protection standards or face civil and criminal penalties. Many large organizations that access, store, maintain or transmit patient-identifiable information are required by law to meet the HIPAA Security Standards by 2005. Small health plans have until 2006.

The Academy will feature two specialized e-learning solutions to provide targeted training on HIPAA security provisions.

The e-learning courses have been tailored for two distinct audiences. The "Introduction for End-users" is designed for health care, insurance and business associate employees, and focuses on security issues for patients and their records as defined by the HIPAA standards. "Security Safeguards for Practitioners" is designed for security managers, officers and practitioners in the health care and insurance industries, teaching the basic principles of HIPAA.
