Homeland security priorities will help boost federal technology spending by 8.5 percent through fiscal 2008, according to a market research survey released by Input, a government-contract research firm based near Washington, D.C.

U.S. government spending on tech products and services will reach $68.2 billion in five years, up from $45.4 billion at the end of the current fiscal year, the survey states. Spending on defense, Homeland security, transportation, energy and the Treasury Department will make up 70 percent of the total tech budget.

Companies that sell outsourced technology services will have better opportunities to win contracts than makers of hardware, software and telecommunications equipment, Input says.
