The U.S. House Committee on the Judiciary will hold a hearing today to discuss the risks of identity theft and fraud as it relates to overall Homeland security.

Sept. 11 hijackers used fake ID cards from a variety of states before boarding the planes. They presented these documents -- mainly driver's licenses or motor vehicle identification cards -- instead of a passport that might have aroused suspicion.

Among the issues to be discussed:

-- terrorists operating under false identities;

-- falsely obtained Social Security numbers; and

-- the lack of security concerning source documents by Federal agencies.

Proper identification and the elimination of fraud are paramount concepts in regards to Homeland security. It also will be the focus of the cover story in our second issue of GOVERNMENT SECURITY, which will be available this month.
