Concerned parents are looking for answers after a student accidentally shot himself with a gun that made its way past the school's metal detectors, a Detroit television station reports.

A 16-year-old boy was with his friends near the cafeteria when a gun inside his pocket went off around 10 a.m., starting the commotion inside the school. The student was transported to St. John Hospital, where he remains in good condition. He reportedly told police he found the gun inside a locker.

Many students weren't surprised the weapon slipped through the school's security. "They didn't check us. They don't ever check us ... you can just walk right through," Nicole Clark, Finney student told the station.

School officials say they do all they can to keep the school safe, but there are 37 doors and only five officers to patrol the campus.
