The rate of cyber-attack activity has increased by 79 percent between July and December 2001, according to The Internet Security Threat Report, released by Riptech Inc., Alexandria, Va., an information protection firm.

The report also says that 39 percent of attacks were deliberately targeted at a specific organization. The intensity of attacks from Israel is higher than the intensity rate from any other country. High-tech, financial services, media/entertainment, and power and energy average 700 attacks per company over the past six months. Attacks on power and energy companies are more than twice the mean of all cyber attacks. Companies with 500 or more employees suffered 50 percent more attacks than companies with less than 500 employees.

The Internet Security Threat Report is based on statistical analysis of more than 5.5 million data points, in which more than 128,000 unique cyber-attacks were discovered, analyzed and investigated.
