Serious security gaps in Metro Detroit's drinking water system need immediate fixes, city and suburban leaders told The Detroit News.
The newspaper's investigation found disabled motion detectors, unsecured reservoir hatches and manholes, aged fences and spotty security checks at Detroit Water and Sewerage Department drinking-water reservoirs. The problems, known by water department officials for more than a year, leave the water supply vulnerable to potential terrorism and contamination, according to water department records and security analysts.
