The Transportation Security Adminstration (TSA) of the U.S. Department of Transportation has ordered an additional $148.6 million in explosives detection systems and components from InVision Technologies, Newark, Calif.

The TSA is attempting to meet a federally madated goal for inspecting all checked baggage for explosives at airports by the end of 2002. InVision has agreed to grant the TSA a limited license for other manufacturers to build CT-based explosives detection systems using InVision technology to expedite the deployment process.

So far this year, the TSA has ordered 400 systems and 100 parts kits for airports around the country, costing more than $300 million. InVision CEO Sergio Magistri, Ph.D., says the TSA has informed the company that it plans to order additional systems at a later date.
