SBC Communications Inc., an Internet Service Provider, is creating a laboratory to test methods of defeating viruses and Web site attacks.

The company will invest $10 million in the laboratory, which will be located in Austin, Texas. SBC Communications is headquartered in Dallas.

"The government should let industry drive the solutions," Howard Schmidt, vice chairman of the Critical Infrastructure Protection Board told The Associated Press.

Fred Chang, who will be the executive in charge of the lab, says he expects significant innovations in three to five years, and anti-hacker technologies within 18 months.
