The company said it has been operating with a large debt burden for some time. The company has terminated nearly all of its 1,800 employees, with only a small group remaining to assist in the liquidation process.
Mosler Inc., was founded by Gustav Mosler, an Austrian immigrant, during the Civil War. He saw the need to protect the records of the many fledgling businesses created by the emergence of the American Industrial Revolution.
In 1867, Mosler and a partner opened the Mosler-Bahmann Safe Company in Cincinnati. By 1891, the company had outgrown its Cincinnati factory and relocated in nearby Hamilton, Ohio. This new location, chosen for its access to rail and barge travel, also offered nearby acreage for employee housing and schools for their children. Mosler corporate headquarters remained in Hamilton until operations ceased Aug. 3.
